MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. — Looking for a spooky start to your summer vacay?
You can now stay in a “macabre” Airbnb on the campus of one of Georgia’s most haunted attractions, an abandoned former mental institution.

The Central State Hospital in Milledgeville opened in 1842 and was once considered the world’s largest mental hospital. It was created after the state called for the creation of a “State Lunatic, Idiot, and Epileptic Asylum.”

Today, the 2,000-acre campus is mostly empty and falling into decay. More than 25,000 people are buried on the grounds in unmarked graves.
“Two thousand acres still echo with the memory of the patients who were treated at the asylum,” the Airbnb listing said. “And you can stay on the only rental property on the entire 2,000 acre campus.”
Guests will stay in a fully renovated 1920s craftsman bungalow on the corner of a large pecan grove across from the infirmary.
The buildings are closed to the public, though trolley tours are available for people to learn about the facility’s history.
