Woman shot outside day care crashes car across the street

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — Some parents found themselves driving up to a crime scene when they took their kids to their day care Friday morning.

Police found a woman shot inside a car in the parking lot of the day care along Glenwood Road in DeKalb County.

Investigators told Channel 2’s Tyisha Fernandes that after the woman was shot, she tried to get away from the shooter, drove the car across four lanes of traffic and headed toward an embankment before hitting a tree.

“This whole area was taped off,” said Ronnie Williams, who works at the day care.

DeKalb County police had the parking lot cordoned off when Williams showed up for work.

“We couldn’t get in because of the situation. They wouldn’t let us enter,” Williams said.

Police said around 4:30 a.m., someone called 911 and reported a woman had been shot in the parking lot.

When officers arrived, they found the wounded woman, who is in her 30s, sitting in the driver's seat of her car.

Investigators said after she was struck by the bullet, she tried to get away from the shooter and her car ended up going down into a ditch and hitting a tree.

“It was terrible, actually. It was terrible to see someone get hurt like that and almost lose their life,” Williams said.

Parents started to show up as police were still collecting evidence from the scene. Investigators say the shooting had nothing to do with the day care and the victim is not a parent of any children.

According to the staff, they chose not to tell the kids what happened outside.

“For the kids, most of all I just want them to stay safe and feel safe. We try not to mention it because if you don’t mention it to them, they don’t know what happened. Try to let them have a pleasant day,” Williams said.

Police said the woman was shot just above her left ear and she thought she was going to die.

She has stabilized and is recovering at a nearby hospital.

Witnesses said they saw three individuals running from the scene.
