Woman armed with knife, blow torch shot by deputies

OCONEE COUNTY, Ga. — Deputies shot and killed a woman who they say charged at them with a knife in Oconee County.

Deputies were called to a home on Creekview Court off White Oak Drive at about 10 Monday morning.

Deputies called for help when they encountered the woman who they say was armed with a knife, a blow torch and at times other objects.

“From talking to other people who had been present inside the house, she had been violent all night,” Sheriff Scott Berry said.

Deputies say the woman ran at them with the knife and she was shot and tased.

Body cam video shows two deputies pleading with the woman to drop the knife.

“Drop the knife. I’m trying to help you, drop the knife,” the deputy pleads.

“Why in the world would I need anyone to help me,” says the woman, now identified as 40-year-old Julia Moss.

Their discussion goes on for 17 minutes before Moss charged at one deputy with the knife. That deputy fired several shots.

The sheriff’s office has turned over their investigation to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

“It’s unfortunate. Julia Moss grew up in Oconee County. She went to high school here, we’ve got a lot of mutual friends. We regret Julia’s death” Berry said.

A man who she was arguing with at the property suffered minor injuries.
