UPS experiencing shipping delays

ATLANTA — A spike in online holiday shopping sales has led to some delays with popular shipping companies like UPS.

Software developer Ship Matrix reports UPS' on-time delivery rate is down 6 percent compared to this time last year. FedEx delivery rates are also reportedly down.

UPS has seen a 10 percent spike in online shopping. The company is reshuffling its staff to its busiest shipping centers and adding rental trucks to its fleet for the holiday shopping season.

"The vast majority of UPS customers have received their shipment on time," said Steve Gaut, UPS spokesperson.

Ship Matrix estimates 91 percent of UPS customers have received shipments on time this holiday season.

"Our operations effectively reacted to higher than expected volumes and this will continue as we progress through our peak shipping period," said Gaut.

Outside of the UPS Customer Care Center on Pleasantdale Road in DeKalb County, some customers said they've already seen their packages delayed.

"It's very frustrating," said Ella Terrance, who was supposed to receive office supplies for her business Friday. "It's on an 18-wheeler and that's all they can tell me and that's all they can do for me."

Other customers said they started shipping their Christmas gifts to out-of-state relatives early to avoid any potential delays.

"You have to plan ahead," said customer Nancy Dyer. "Get your boxes, get everything planned ahead of time."
