ATHENS, Ga. — Athens-Clarke County police arrested a University of Georgia student who they say stabbed another student with a broken beer bottle at an Athens bar around 1:30 a.m. Wednesday.
Police arrested Robert Williams, 19. As of Wednesday afternoon, Williams was still being held at the Clarke County Jail, charged with aggravated assault.
Police said Williams attacked fellow student, Michael McGuire, 19, at The Double Barrel bar on East Broad Street.
Channel 2's Matt Belanger spoke with two students who witnessed the fight, but who did not want to be identified. One of the students said he saw Williams fighting with a girl at the bar and McGuire stepped in to stop the argument.
"He stepped in tried to break it up and the guy was holding a broken bottle and just swung it and hit him in the neck," the student said.
Both students said there was a large amount of blood. McGuire's father told Channel 2 Action News over the phone that his son was discharged from the hospital and is recovering with deep cuts on his neck and arm.
"It's messed up. He's lucky he's alive, honestly," one of the students said.
Students said both teens were members of fraternities on campus, but that had little to do with the situation.
"It was two guys arguing about a girl. I mean, you see that everywhere fraternity or not," the student said. "It just shows your life can change in a second it's just a bad situation for everyone involved."
