AT&T U-Verse customers report emergency messages

ATLANTA — Several AT&T U-Verse customers have contacted Channel 2 Action News about emergency messages being displayed on their TVs Friday morning.

The messages ask people to pay attention for emergency announcements and reportedly won't let people change the channel.

"This station has interrupted it's regular programming at the request of the White House to participate in the Emergency Alert System," the alert said. "Do not use your telephone. The telephone lines should be kept open for emergency use."

The messages have been taken down but appeared on televisions across the country.

AT&T spokesman Lance Skelly told Channel 2 consumer investigator Jim Strickland, "We are currently trying to find out what it is and where it is originating from."

Later AT&T released a statement stating: "A Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) investigation indicates that a nationally syndicated radio show not affiliated with AT&T accidently sent a message over the National Emergency Alert System. This false message was carried on our network, as well as some other providers. We apologize to our customers"
