Severe weather moves through metro Atlanta

Severe weather moved through metro Atlanta this afternoon bringing heavy rain and hail to Cobb, Fulton, DeKalb and Gwinnett counties.

Severe Thunderstorm warnings were issued in Cobb and Fulton counties, but expired at 5:15 p.m. Although the warnings are no longer in effect, Chief Meteorologist Glenn Burns says lightning, hail and wind gusts up to 45 mph are possible in some areas.

A tree fell on a home in DeKalb County during the storms Monday.

A blue tarp now protects the roof of the home on North Shore Drive in Lithonia.

The tree went through part of the roof, collapsing part of the ceiling in a bathroom inside the home.

“You can see the sky it just looks like an open sky like the sun room or something,” said homeowner Tai Harmon.

Tree removal crews said the heavy rains were definitely to blame for the tree coming down.

“Apparently there is a drainage ditch behind the woman’s property and all the rain going through it, just soften up the root base and fell over on her house,” said Andrew Pelfrey with Gunnison Tree.

The heavy rain caused traffic delays across the city during rush hour. One viewer sent us this video of flooded roads in Adair Park in Atlanta.
