A local man is preparing for a major surgery that he hopes will lead to a more normal life.
More than a year ago, Christopher Sparkman was seriously injured in a shooting at a FedEx facility in Cobb County.
Sparkman’s wife, Jamie, told Channel 2’s Linda Stouffer that her husband is about to undergo a 14-hour operation with a grueling recovery.
She said his 49th surgery could be the most important one yet.
“Chris and I call this surgery life-giving in that it’s supposed to be the one where they reconnect everything,” Jaime Sparkman said.
In April 2014, an employee pulled up to the FedEx facility in Kennesaw and fired a shotgun at Christopher Sparkman at point-blank range.
The shot tore through his abdomen and digestive system.
“There are a lot of miracles that have happened with Chris. I received the greatest miracle, his life, on April 29,” Jamie Sparkman said.
Medical costs for the family are piling up because Jamie needs to care for her husband full time, so neither of them can work.
“Before the shooting, we’re husband and wife. After the shooting, we’re caretaker and patient,” she said.
Besides a workmen’s comp check, there has been no financial rescue from FedEx or security company Allied Barton.
Jamie said her husband is ready for this surgery, but asks for prayers for a complete recovery.
“There’s this period of dread, fear, misery and pain, but there will be life again and marriage and happiness and newlywed time,” she said.
