Schools closed in some parts of North Georgia because of power outages and storm damage.
Channel 2's Steve Gehlbach looked into the problems crews were dealing with in Habersham and White counties Monday afternoon.
Both counties had no school Monday because of power outages and large trees down, blocking some roads.
In Hall County, school buses trying to get to Sardis Elementary were detoured around a wash out. A large chunk of Sardis Road collapsed when a culvert flowing into Lake Lanier couldn’t hold all of the water. Officials said it would take at least two weeks to fix.
One tree fell on a house on Galloway Street in Cornelia. Crews cut away large branches off the roof.
The rain and wind also took down power lines.
Georgia power crews worked to replace a cracked pole, with thousands of customers without power.
Homeowners are anxious to have the lights back on, and not hoping to see any more rain or high winds.
"Yeah, I heard it,” homeowner J.C Land said. “Heard the wind too yesterday morning. Got up high. Thought would blow one of these over here on my house … sounded like a darn tornado … wind was high. It was blowing trash cans everywhere."
Habersham EMC said they worked to reduce the number of outages from more than 10,000 to less than 1,000. They hope to have power completely restored by Tuesday.
Habersham County Schools will open as normal on Tuesday.
