Repairs done on SUV before tire flew off, killed woman

Channel 2 Action News is learning more about the case of a woman who died last week after being struck in the back by a tire while walking down a southwest Atlanta road.
Investigators say the SUV involved had work done at a nearby tire store before the broken wheel flew off and hit Geraldine Lane. She was walking down Metropolitan Parkway near the intersection of Connell Avenue.
Channel 2’s Tyisha Fernandes obtained a file of the investigation that shows that minutes before the accident, the SUV had work done at Nationwide Discount Mufflers & Brakes, one mile north of the accident scene.
“(The tire) went up 23 feet and landed on the impact right on Mama's back,” Lane's daughter, Hollie Barton, said.

Fernandes talked to a manager and a worker who were both at the shop on the day of the accident.

They said they didn't even know a woman had been killed, and they never worked on the SUV involved. The manager and worker said they put wheels on a similar SUV.

The victim’s family, meanwhile, spent the day shopping for clothes in which to bury Lane on Thursday.

The family wants police to clear up all the confusion as to which tire shop really installed the faulty tire and hold someone accountable for the deadly mistake.

“I wish someone would just say that they're working on this to make sure it doesn't happen to another family,” Barton said.
