Rain causes local apartment ceiling collapse

One resident says all the rain that's been hitting the metro has caused her apartment ceiling to collapse.

ATLANTA — It happened right above a child's bed.

Jessica Jaglois went to the apartment in northeast Atlanta to take a look at the damage and talk to the tenant who is concerned for her family's safety.

Tenant Miana Kenny says maintenance has actually been out to the apartment twice now.

She said they did nothing but leave a couple of buckets to collect the water that is still falling from her children's ceiling.

Kenny told Jaglois she has nowhere to go and is afraid for her children to be in that apartment.

Five-year-old Emanuel told Jaglois he can't go in his bedroom anymore.

“We have to watch TV in my mom's room,” he said.

That is due to the collapsed ceiling, which left a crater-like hole is in his bedroom ceiling where rainwater has started to flow in.

“Next thing I know I hear a little thump and all this was on the floor. And it's still falling little by little,” Kenny said.

Kenny says the roof began leaking Tuesday but when she called maintenance, they didn't do anything except leave two buckets to collect the dirty water.

“When maintenance man came over, looked at it, they did nothing. He said somebody would be over Wednesday. Nobody showed up,” she said.

Kenny is afraid what happened in the bedroom could happen elsewhere in her apartment with the steady rain in the forecast.

“It’s leaning in, slowly but surely, like it could fall in at any moment,” she told Jaglois.

For now, Kenny’s children aren't allowed in their room.

She believes the collapse could have been prevented if it was fixed days ago.

Jaglois called the Bedford Pines leasing office and left a message on the 24-hour emergency line.

No one has yet to return the call.
