Cops: Lawrenceville apartment deadly shooting not random

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. — Gwinnett County police said there was no sign of forced entry in what they initially believed was an apartment home invasion that left one man dead.

Channel 2's Sophia Choi was at the scene on Sweetwater Road in Lawrenceville, where Gwinnett County police earlier said the shooting might be a case of a resident fighting back. But on Saturday afternoon, investigators determined the people involved knew each other. Police said the resident shot in self-defense, while one man is dead and another is on the run.

Police said they received a call about shots fired at the Wesley St. Claire apartments on Saturday, shortly after 3 a.m.

"(The resident) is alleging that he is a victim of a home invasion-burglary, and he's currently being interviewed by our investigations division," Gwinnett County police Sgt. Rich Long said. "We are slowly putting the facts together; taking time to find out exactly what happened here this morning."

Police said the man who died took several bullets to the body. Police are still in the initial stages of their investigation, authorities told Choi.
