Man surrenders to police after standoff, shootout

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — Police said they have a suspect in custody after a man tried to rob a DeKalb County Family Dollar store, then fired shots at police officers and hid out in a house.

Investigators are not releasing the man's name, but Channel 2 Action News cameras caught video of the man surrendering to police officers on his knees.

It all started around 9:30 a.m. at the Family Dollar store near the intersection of Panola and Young roads.

Investigators said someone at the Family Dollar called 911 about the armed robbery, and by the time the suspect fled, police had a perimeter set up around the store.

"The suspect was fleeing out the rear of the store when he encountered officers and fired a shot," said Mekka Parish with the DeKalb County Police Department.

She said police fired back, but it's believed no one was hurt.

The man then fled to a nearby neighborhood where he ran into a home and had a standoff with police.

Neighbor Vicky Clark said she could hear the gunshots.

"They shot off six rounds and then I guess they ran down there and they had a standoff down there," Clark said.

"She witnessed him kicking in the rear door to make entry into the home," Parish said.

For four hours police tried to coax the suspect out of a house they think he randomly chose.

Police dogs scoured the neighborhood and a robot was used to help investigators zero in on the house less than 200 yards from the store.

Channel 2 Action News was there when the suspect was finally caught, surrendering on his knees to police.

Police have not identified the suspect yet. They said money was taken, but it's unclear how much.

A Family Dollar representative said they are cooperating with investigators to try to figure out exactly how this happened.
