Police find SUV from string of hit-and-runs that killed man; driver still on run

Authorities say they have found the SUV wanted in a string of hit-and-runs that left one man dead and several other people injured.

NewsChopper 2 was over the scene on I-75 South near Delk Road on Channel 2 Action News This Morning when several Marietta police officers pulled over the SUV.

Marietta police said they received an alert that a car with a tag number matching the SUV passed through license plate readers in the area of Northwest Parkway and Franklin Gateway.

During the traffic stop, police took five people into custody without incident. DeKalb later investigators said the person of interest in the case was not in the SUV and they are still looking for the driver.

The hit-and-runs began Sunday in DeKalb County when a man was struck by car and killed around 10:45 a.m. Sunday at Wade Walker Park. The victim’s vehicle, a silver 2011 Hyundai Santa Fe, was stolen.

A vehicle matching that description was involved in the hit-and-run with a family of six on bicycles at North DeKalb Mall around 2:30 p.m., severely injuring a 4-year-old.

Police said the same vehicle was involved in another accident in another jurisdiction around 12 p.m., but they haven’t released the details of that accident.

Marietta authorities say they are holding the group for DeKalb County investigators, who are expected to make a determination on charges.

If anyone has information about the three incidents, DeKalb police said to call 911 or their Homicide Unit at 770-724-7850.
