MARIETTA, Ga. — Channel 2 is looking into metro Atlanta's booming deer population after drivers saw a deer taking a stroll through the Marietta Square Friday.
The wandering deer is a symptom of what could become a big problem.
Police did their best to escort the animal past the Cobb County Courthouse, through the Square, and toward North Marietta Parkway.
Officers used a siren to scare it away from traffic. After a while, it headed back towards Kennesaw Mountain.
The Department of Natural Resources told Channel 2's Ross Cavitt the deer population is exploding.
"We have noticed, especially with the extreme cold temperature this winter that we had this year, that most of the deer have banded together," said National Park Service Ranger Anthony Winegar.
Winegar said the Park Service will soon start a survey of deer population on the national park property. If necessary, they will hold public hearings to figure out the best way to thin the herd.
