NORTH FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — A Sandy Springs taxicab driver is accused of trying to kill a man after an argument.
Police told Channel 2’s Mike Petchenik that they arrested Kelbin Garcia Saturday after the attack on Northwood Drive.
Cellphone video from a witness shows police swarming a nightclub in a shopping center on the corner of Northwood and Roswell Road just after 10:30 p.m.
“We just picked up my mom from work and we were driving and all of a sudden we heard cops coming right behind us,” witness Francisco Sanchez told Petchenik.
He said he saw emergency workers rushing a shooting victim to the hospital.
“I think it’s terrible,” he said. “No one should ever get shot. If he died, it would have been worse.”
The victim, Guadalupe Miranda, told Petchenik that he confronted Garcia for picking on a younger friend, and after the two exchanged words, he said Garcia fired between six and eight shots in his direction. Several bullets hit him the legs, he said.
Miranda is recovering at Grady Memorial Hospital.
Police said Garcia fled the area after the shooting.
"The suspect left the scene and left the taxi down on Roswell Road, and it was later recovered by the owner of the taxi company and the responding officers," Sgt. Forrest Bohannon said.
Bohannon said Garcia later turned himself in to police.
He is facing charges of aggravated assault with intent to commit murder, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime and carrying a weapon without a license. As of Tuesday afternoon, he remained in the Fulton County Jail.
