Peachtree City residents split on proposed water park resort

The city council must soon decide whether to allow development of the resort not far from a residential area.

PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. — Peachtree City residents are wrestling with what to do about a controversial water park project.

The city council must soon decide whether to allow development of the resort not far from a residential area.

Many who live in Peachtree City like it as it is.

"It's a small community. Pretty much everybody knows everybody. At the same time, you kind of like being exclusive. You don't have to worry about all the riff-raff," resident Rocky Bivens told Channel 2's Berndt Petersen.

But some believe that's exactly what may arrive along with the proposed Great Wolf Lodge water park resort.

City leaders are trying to decide whether to allow the $75 million project.

"It's all family oriented. I mean, there are kids galore. From what we've seen, we had friends and relatives from our side in Jersey, and they all loved it," said Brian Pickett of Edison, New Jersey.

A recent study by Georgia Tech predicts 1,100 new jobs and millions of dollars in tax revenue from the project. Critics are concerned about traffic and crime.

"Well, traffic is everywhere. And crime is what it is. You can't stop crime from coming places. But we don't have a public transportation or bus system here. People, working people who earn their own money basically will come in their own transportation," resident Latisca Holmes said.

But some say change could be difficult.

"That might bother people, but overall I think it's needed. It will bring a different type of crowd than what they're used to in the area. It can't hurt," Bivens said.

The Peachtree City Council is expected to settle the issue on April 16.
