ATHENS, Ga. — The University of Georgia Athletic Department confirmed to Channel 2 Action News that running back Todd Gurley tore his ACL in Saturday’s game against Auburn and will be out for the rest of the season.
UGA says an MRI performed Sunday morning confirmed the ACL tear in Gurley’s left knee.
Gurley, a former Heisman Trophy frontrunner, injured his knee on a 6-yard run with just over five minutes remaining in the fourth quarter against the Tigers Saturday night in Sanford Stadium.
Gurley was attempting to cut back after planting his left leg when he went down wincing in pain.
Gurley walked off the field with help from trainers and could be seen sitting on the sideline with ice on his knee.
Several players walked over and spoke to Gurley before he left the field on a cart after the game.
Gurley had just returned from a four-game suspension for allegedly receiving money to sign autographs. He reportedly received $3,000 over the course of two years.
Gurley rushed for 138 yards and a touchdown on 29 carries Saturday before leaving the game.
UGA Director of Sports Medicine Ron Courson says a surgery date has not yet been determined.
In a news conference Sunday night Head Coach Mark Richt said the injury is "sad, sad news." He told reporters he did not think about pulling Gurley on the drive because they were trying to "seal the deal."
"Todd's been fantastic. One of the best running backs I've ever coached. He played his heart out for Georgia," added Richt.
