Man wanted in nearly 2-year-old murder nabbed by authorities in Sandy Springs

SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. — Sandy Springs police helped U.S. Marshals arrest a man wanted in connection to a shooting that killed an Ohio woman nearly two years ago.

Na’Kia Crawford was shot and killed in June 2020. Crawford was shot numerous times while running errands with her grandmother, according to the Akron Beacon Journal.

Members of the task force had recently learned Adarus Black was living in the Atlanta area under a fake name, U.S. Marshals said in a news release.

They identified Black as he left an apartment building along Greyfield Lane in Sandy Springs and was taken into custody.

Police also confiscated a gun and some cash during the arrest. A female companion was interviewed and released in the incident.

Sandy Springs police also posted video of the arrest on their Facebook page.

“Mr. Black evaded capture for over two years hiding as a fugitive until he picked Sandy Springs as his new hiding spot,” the Sandy Springs Police Department said in a post on Facebook. “Mr. Black was turned over to federal authorities and will be extradited back to Ohio.”

As for Crawford’s family, they are happy an arrest has been made in the case.

“It’s been a long 20 months waiting for this day to come,” Na’Kia’s father Nicholas Crawford told the newspaper.

He called his young daughter’s death a senseless act of gun violence.

“You know there was adults in his life helping him out,” he told the newspaper.

Saria Crawford, Na’Kia’s grandmother, said the people who helped Black hide should be charged too.

“The people who protected him, they don’t deserve to be walking around here, knowing what he did,” Saria Crawford said. “He had to get money from somewhere. And shame on the people who enabled him.”

Despite the arrest, Crawford’s family say they will never be the same.

“My life is never going to be the same. It’s just not. It’s had a horrific effect on our entire family ... I don’t have closure. I don’t know if I ever will,” Saria Crawford said.

Black was one of three wanted fugitives that were arrested in the Atlanta area in the matter of about 36 hours.
