State health officials say there are no documented cases of food borne illness related to Chipotle Mexican Grill restaurants in Georgia.
Dozens of people got sick from an E.coli outbreak at Chipotle restaurants in nine states this fall in addition to 120 recent cases of norovirus linked to a Boston Chipotle restaurant.
Channel 2’s Carol Sbarge talked to the director of environmental health with Georgia Public Health about what inspectors do to help prevent people from getting sick while eating out.
Dr. Chris Rustin said there doesn’t seem to be a connection between the two foodborne illness outbreaks at the Chipotles.
Rustin said norovirus is a fast moving bug that is common this time of year. He says if it is spread by a food service worker the most probable way is either through their hands or by coughing.
Rustin also told Sbarge it could well have been spread by a patron.
If you suspect you got sick from eating at a restaurant you are advised to go to your doctor to be tested.
You also should report it to your local health department. Rustin says health inspectors in Georgia work to prevent outbreaks by making sure restaurant employees wash hands, disinfect surfaces and cook food at the proper temperature.
Rustin says their No. 1 goal is to prevent foodborne illness and he believes those steps are effective.
He says when people get sick after eating out they usually assume it is from the last place they ate, however that is not always the case.
