NEWTON COUNTY, Ga. — A chase through Newton County involving sheriff’s deputies and Georgia State patrol ended in a crash that killed one person and seriously injured two others.
A GSP trooper and Newton County sheriff’s deputies were chasing a stolen Volkswagen Passat on I-20 near exit 88 Sunday morning just before 11:30 a.m.

At one point, the driver got off of the interstate, ran a red light and got right back on the interstate.
The chase eventually led to the intersection of Old Hillandale Drive and Lithonia Industrial Boulevard, where the driver again sped past a red light.
A Ford Super Duty truck with an Explorer in tow was coming in the opposite direction down Lithonia Industrial Blvd. at the same time, and the two vehicles collided.

The stolen Passat then began flipping and landed in a ditch near the road. The passenger in the back seat, a 37-year-old woman, was thrown from the car and killed. Her identity has not been released.
The driver, a 30-year-old man, and the front seat passenger, a 31-year-old woman, were both extracted from the car and taken to Grady Memorial Hospital by ambulance. They are both listed in serious condition.

The driver of the truck sustained minor injuries.
GSP says that they are conducting an investigation and charges are pending in connection with this case.
