Neighbors upset by plan for boutique hotel in Alpharetta

ALPHARETTA, Ga. — A developer’s plan for a boutique hotel for millennial business travelers isn’t sitting well with some of its future neighbors.

Ethan Underwood, an attorney for the developer for Best Western, told Channel 2’s Mike Petchenik the hotel would be called Vibe. It would be similar to “Hotel Indigo” in Athens, and it would open at the corner of Haynes Bridge and Devore roads.

“It’s designed for a high-tech, really a millennial customer,” said Underwood.

Underwood said the area is already zoned for commercial use, but the developer needs permission from the city to open a hotel there. He said the area in question is perfect for such a venture.

“Proximity to (Ga.) 400, quick access,” he said.  “You’ve also got restaurants in the general area; it’s close to downtown Alpharetta, close to the new Avalon development.”

Randy Jones’ backyard would back up to the hotel, and he said he doesn’t support the project.

“It’s glass and windows, and people are gonna be able to look at us,” he said.  “We’ll have no privacy.”

Several other neighbors had similar concerns that such a project wouldn’t fit in with the neighborhood.

“It’s going to kill the value of my land and my house here,” said Jones.  “I want it to go away. I like it the way it is.”

Underwood told Petchenik the developer wants to be a good neighbor and is currently meeting with neighbors to address concerns.

The project goes before Alpharetta’s planning commission on Thursday and is scheduled to go before the city council on Nov. 16.
