76-year-old, 2 others accused of meth trafficking in Clayton Co.

Neighbors are applauding police after officers arrested three people, including a 76-year-old woman, for allegedly trafficking methamphetamine.

Officers arrested Lourece Mercer, her-45 year-old son Mark Mercer, and his girlfriend, Stacey Lynn Bishop.

"I applaud that. That's good," Darren Williams told Channel 2's Tom Jones, after hearing news of the arrest.

Neighbors in the Wingate Hills subdivision are thanking Clayton County police and the U.S. Marshals Office for removing a source of irritation from their community.

"We knew something was going on we just couldn't pinpoint it," said Nathaniel Reese.

The Mercers and Bishop are charged with trafficking methamphetamine after officers say they found a huge bag of the drug in their home on Palmetto Way. Detectives say it weighs almost a pound.

"This is well above personal use," said Clayton County police spokesman Clarence Cox said.

Officers say they also found marijuana, wads of cash and guns in the home.

"And we happened to see a lot of people coming in and out in and out," Williams said of the constant traffic at the Mercer's home.

Then he said crime started to increase.

"We started having home invasions. I've been here seven or eight years. We never had home invasions," Williams said.
The neighborhood organized and had several meetings about the issue. Then they got police involved. Officers conducted surveillance and moved in and made the arrests. Jones asked officers about a 76-year-old woman being arrested for trafficking meth.

He said it is "something that is not uncommon, but is very unusual."

Meanwhile, police say they appreciate residents who saw something and said something. And neighbors want to pat police on the back as well.

"Because when we called them with issues like this they're right on top of it," Williams said.

The Mercers and Bishop are being held without bond.
