Neighbor catches moped driving copper thief

None — A Hall County man, angered by a moped that ran across his lawn, helped police catch a thief who officers said raided a vacant home.

Paul Dylan Gross, 19, of Gainesville, was charged with one count of burglary after the incident.

Deputies said the resident saw Gross leave a vacant home on Poplar Spring Road with copper wire and tubing draped across his shoulder and moped about lunchtime on Nov. 8.

The man told deputies he decided to chase Gross and eventually managed to stop the moped on Candler Road. Gross told the man he took the copper because he “had tickets to pay” and raced off again with the Good Samaritan in pursuit.

The neighbor told police he lost sight of the moped near a commercial development on Leland Road and Webb Girth Road, but deputies eventually tracked down and arrested Gross on Moore Mills Road.

Gross was released from the Hall County jail on $10,000 bond.
