Mother warns others after online shop sends wrong prom dress

MERIWETHER COUNTY, Ga. — A mother has a warning for others after her daughter received the wrong prom dress and she was unable to get her money back.

Peggy Marshall ordered the dress from newpromshops.com for $200.

She said she knew the dress was all wrong the moment she opened the bag.

“This is not anything that I would even want to wear,” Marshall said.

She said not only was the wrong dress delivered, but it was also poorly made.

Marshall said she emailed the company to try to get the money back that she paid with her debit card. A company representative only offered 10 percent off her next purchase.

“They explained to me that, ‘We don’t give money back for personal reasons,’” she said.

Channel 2’s Audrey Washington called the number listed for the company on the shipping label and got a hospital in Indiana.

The woman who answered said the hospital has received several calls about prom dresses, but it is not affiliated with newpromshops.com.

Lori Silverman is a manager with Clark Howard’s Consumer Action Center. She said a little research about the company could have helped.

“Google the site and put in ‘scams’ or ‘reviews’ to see if it had been reviewed,” she said.

Silverman also said it is best to pay with credit cards when buying online.

“Had she paid with her credit card, she could have contacted her credit card company and filed a dispute for fraud,” she said.

Marshall has since bought another dress for her daughter’s prom.
