Mother found guilty in shooting death of son

COLLEGE PARK, Ga. — A jury found a mother guilty Tuesday of involuntary manslaughter and reckless conduct in the death of her 15-year-old son during a shooting in 2015.

College Park police charged Latoya Tilson in the murder of her son after she fired a shot into a crowd of teens to break up a fight involving her 15-year-old son in College Park in April 2015.

She says she was trying to stop a group of bullies from beating her son.
Pierre was hit in the head and died a few days later. Another teen was injured in the shooting.
Tilson

said it was a terrible mistake and that she fired into the air, but struck her son.

Prosecutors say Tilson was trying to shoot another teen, and missed.
"She brought a deadly weapon to a kids' fight,” said prosecuting attorney Adam Abbate.
It is likely that Tilson will be granted bond ahead of her early August sentencing hearing. Her son’s father is expected to be among those testifying. She faces a maximum of 10 years in prison for the involuntary manslaughter conviction.
