Mom delivers baby inside Gwinnett Kroger

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — Channel 2 Action News has learned about a very special delivery for a Lawrenceville couple.

They didn't make it to a hospital in time and delivered their baby in the Kroger on Peachtree Parkway near McGinnis Ferry Road in Suwanee.

Eight-day-old Cora Ross is 7 pounds 11 ounces. She is the couple's third child.

Halfway to North Fulton at rush hour last Thursday night, Deborah Ross' water broke. She and her husband knew they'd never make it to the hospital. The couple pulled into a shopping center on Peachtree Parkway and spotted a Kroger. The Rosses say they rushed through the front door.

"A patron basically said the restrooms are all the way in the back. That's when we kind of looked at each other and I could see in her face that the stress of it there,” he said.

They never made it past the shopping carts.

"I was standing there. There was no time to sit down or lie down or have a blanket or a towel or anything for me. I just instantly held her head. She was already coming out," Deborah Ross said.

“In another 90 seconds she was already in my hands,” Andrew Ross said.

He told Davis the baby was not breathing at first. He cleared the baby's mouth and throat and he says she started crying.

"Kroger was instantly on the spot; they came with some blankets and pulling them off the shelves and brought them and was  able to keep her warm," Andrew Ross said.

EMS arrived within minutes, clamped the cord, and Andrew Ross, in the middle of snapping photos, cut the cord and then followed the ambulance to the hospital.

Deborah Ross told Davis she was too embarrassed to look anyone in the eye.

"And I knew everyone was thinking that's the lady that just had her baby in a grocery store," the mother said.

Davis asked the Rosses if they are planning any more children. They said they’ll wait and see, but definitely no more deliveries in supermarkets.
