Man, woman shot within walking distance of APD headquarters

A man and woman were shot within walking distance of landmarks like the state Capitol and Atlanta police headquarters while they were sitting inside their SUV.
According to police, Shakira Gillam and Tyrone Gates were inside a green Lincoln Navigator when they were shot at least three times each. The gunman fired into the vehicle from the rear and driver's side.
A neighbor near Peachtree Street and Trinity Avenue said he heard about eight gunshots around 2 a.m.
Channel 2 Action News arrived at the scene just as an ambulance rushed the two victims to a hospital. Authorities say both are listed in critical condition.
A witness to the incident said a man identified as "Joe" came up to the vehicle and began shooting and then ran away towards Pryor Street.
The witness described the gunman as wearing a white T-shirt, light-blue plaid shorts and a light-blue hat and is known to drive a light-blue Cadillac.
Police hope a surveillance camera in the area caught an image of the gunman.
A neighbor said despite being so close to police headquarters, downtown parking lots attract a lot of drug and other illegal activity, especially at night.
"We do know that this is an area where we do see people parked here after hours, but [I am] not sure what their business was this time of the morning,” said Capt. Terrell Griffin with the Atlanta Police Department.
