Man steals money, runs over customer at Cobb post office

COBB COUNTY, Ga. — A man inside of the Austell main post office counting his money was robbed by the person in line behind him.

Lt. Sharon Garrett, with Austell Police Department, says the robber "ran out the front door, and the victim went running after him."

That is when he tried getting his money back and instead got slammed by the car door and run over. The victim is at Atlanta Medical Center. He suffered some broken bones, but his injuries are not life-threatening.

"That is crazy," said Felicia Mahone, who believes the economy is fueling these types of crimes of opportunity.

"People are out of work and jobs. Good people are starting to do bad things," said Mahone.

Aelicia Mahone added, "Seems like it's getting crazier and crazier each day."

The area is described as quiet and fun; not the type of place where you need to watch your back.

"People should be able to just count money if they want without people just coming in and taking what's not theirs," Aelicia Mahone stated.

Police are searching for the man who took off toward Mableton.

Garrett described the robber and getaway car.

"Late teens to early 20s, black male with short hair. He's in a silver or gray four-door, smaller type of vehicle," Garrett said.

Austell police are not yet ready to release a picture of the man that they're pulling from a security camera inside the post office.
