Man killed in crash after surviving accident two years earlier

CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. — A family wants answers after someone hit and killed their loved one while he worked at the university he graduated from.

Robert Andrews’ family told Channel 2 Action News he was involved in a car crash about two years ago. He survived, only to be involved in another crash at Clayton State University.

Malinda Dyer never thought her son, 25-year-old Andrews, would graduate from college.

“It took him six years,” Dyer said.

He attended several schools.

“I’m thinking to myself, ‘Are we gonna do this?’ And he finally did it,” Dyer said.

Andrews finally graduated from Clayton State University in 2018. He then began working at the school as a groundskeeper in November that year.

Andrews had no idea his life would end while working at the university.

“Can't nothing bring my son back,” Dyer said.

Andrews was working Monday around 10 a.m. in a parking lot near Laker Hall.

The Georgia State Patrol said 36-year-old Shahriar Husainy hit Andrews as Husainy drove through the parking lot.

The Mundy’s Mill High School graduate died at the scene.

“My brother was not out robbing people, raping people. He was at work,” the victim’s brother said.

Melissa Bates still can't believe her brother died from being hit in a parking lot.

“So you mean to tell me if you’re doing 25 mph, maybe even 30, you’re not gonna kill somebody?” Bates said.

Dyer said Andrews wasn't perfect, but he was a good son. She doesn't want to think about the crash that took his life.

“I can't even imagine at this point. I'm trying not to,” Dyer said.

The Georgia State Patrol has not charged anyone. GSP said the investigation is ongoing.

A university spokesperson said the matter is still under investigation so there is not much information it can release.
