Man denied bond in baby death case

CHEROKEE COUNTY, Ga. — A man accused of assaulting a 3-week-old baby who died Sunday was denied bond during his first appearance before a judge in Cherokee County.

The district attorney listed the felony charges against Nicholas Campbell, including cruelty, battery and aggravated assault.

The 26-year-old Canton man is accused of attacking his girlfriend's baby.

Investigators became aware of alleged cruelty while responding to a child not breathing at a residence on Magnolia Springs Drive.

The newborn was transported to a hospital and taken off life support Sunday.

"The accused did cause malicious bodily harm to Ciarra Campbell by rendering her liver, spleen and kidneys useless when he inflicted blunt force trauma to her abdomen," said Cherokee County District Attorney Shannon Wallace.

The district attorney said the defendant broke the infant's collar bone, femur and caused a severe head injury.

Investigators said Campbell name is on the baby's birth certificate, although he is not her father.

"Because of the grave nature of these charges, I think no bond in this particular case is warranted at this particular time," the judge said Monday.

The district attorney told the judge additional charges will likely be filed following an autopsy of the infant Tuesday.
