Man accused of holding children at gunpoint during violent robbery

SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. — A suspected gang member accused of a home invasion where an infant and 8-year-old child were held at gunpoint with their mother is on the run.

Police say 17-year-old Gregory Bernard Dawson, also known as Trey Mitchell burst through the doors of a Sandy Springs apartment and held a family at gunpoint during a violent robbery.

Police say he was given a bond, cut loose of his ankle monitor and fled days before three other suspects were set to testify against him. All four suspects are teens.

“The other people involved were sentenced on Monday to five years to serve in jail for the crime they committed with Dawson,” Sandy Springs Sgt. Forrrest Bohannon said.

Police say Dawson is affiliated with the bloods.

The victim told police she looked through the peep hole, thought it was her brother-in-law and let the gunmen in.

A 4-month-old and an 8-year-old were home at the time. Police say the 8-year-old was witness to everything.

Police went out and caught them once and now they have to do it all over again.

“That's violent. I mean that's hideous,” neighbor Victoria Thompson said.

Dawson is accused in a list of crimes that include home invasion, cruelty to children and armed robbery.

“He's on the run. He could do anything. He could hurt anyone. If he did it before he's going to do it again,” Thompson said.

“If he is willing to commit these crimes against adults and children at the same time, (he’s) very dangerous,” Bohannon said.

Dawson was one of four accused of robbing the apartment. They were all caught. Dawson was granted a bond by a Fulton County judge.

“He was required to wear an ankle monitoring bracelet. He did have an ankle monitor on (and) somehow he has disabled that device,” Bohannon said.

There's now a new warrant for his arrest. Channel 2’s Liz Artz called the victim, who asked her not to use her or her children's name. She said they are terrified and have moved from the apartment

“He may come after her again because he don't want her as a witness. If I were her, I'd be frightened, I’d be terrified, I’d be really angry they let him out,” Thompson said.

Police are asking for the public’s help to locate Dawson. His three accomplices remain in jail.
