DAWSON COUNTY, Ga. — Highway 53 near Sundown Lane in Dawson County was closed Friday after a driver ran into a fire engine responding to an emergency call.
The Fire Department confirmed 11:15 a.m. the truck was heading east on Highway 53 where traffic was stopped.
A woman who drove around the stopped traffic hit the fire truck.
The collision forced the truck to leave the road and down a ravine.
"They were probably 100-150 feet off the road," said Dawson County Fire Deputy Chief Tim Satterfield.
The two firefighters on the truck were taken to North East Georgia Medical Center, in Gainesville, for treatment of minor injuries.
The woman driving the car was also transported to North East Georgia Medical Center for treatment of injuries.
Highway 53 is closed while heavy machinery is brought out to remove the fire truck from the ravine.
Satterfield says this should be a cautionary tale for anyone who encounters an emergency vehicle.
"These weather conditions right here, it's hard to stop, but with wet roads, you need to come to a complete stop and let them go around you," said Satterfield.
Satterfield says his fire truck was badly damaged and is out of service.
