HENRY COUNTY, Ga. — A Georgia woman who is finally preparing for the birth of her first child after five years of trying to conceive got a very special baby shower on Saturday.

Ashley Washington and her husband Jamelle, of McDonough, are eagerly awaiting the birth of their first child, a boy.

Washington’s mother reached out to Channel 2 Action News to tell her story.

“My daughter has Lupus and after 5 years she was finally able to get pregnant... then COVID19 happened,” Betty Williams wrote. “All of her showers were cancelled until today... what a surprise! We gave her a drive thru baby shower!!!”

Coincidentally, it was also the Washington’s 11th wedding anniversary.

Williams said Ashley was diagnosed with lupus in 2013 at the age of 26. For five years, she's undergone treatment with specialists, forgoing some of her Lupus treatments and enduring pain to try to conceive.

“When she became pregnant, like most women, she began planning and was excited anticipating all of the fun events, especially the baby showers!” Williams said. “She actually had planned and payed for three showers!”

Ashley texted her mother in recent days to tell her how disappointed she was to miss the celebrations of her pregnancy. The two have been separated for two months as everyone quarantines.

On Saturday, her friends and family made sure they still celebrated her upcoming bundle of joy, even while social distancing.

Friends and family drove by the surprised mom-to-be's home with decorated cars, shower gifts and cheers.

“There were at least 15 cars of happy people bringing gifts and cheers!” Williams said. “Seeing my daughter after not being with her for the last 2 months just warmed my heart. She said today was absolutely perfect!”

The couple plans to name their son Jase. The baby boy is due in two weeks.
