Wild parties and bad renters! Neighbors complain of noise at their lake neighborhood

HALL COUNTY, Ga. — Some homeowners on Lake Lanier are sounding off about vacation rental homes being used for wild partying that rattles the neighborhood.

Online vacation home rental sites are exploding in popularity, and people are trying to make a little extra cash, while others are trying to save money.

Most guests are well behaved, but there's been some unruly behavior reported in the Cherokee Forest community.

Lake Lanier is a major vacation destination, but since there are few lakefront hotels, lakefront homes are in big demand by people who rent them through online sites such as Airbnb.

“We have heard some complaints about parking and trash, the transient nature of some of the occupants on those homes,” said county administrator Randy Knighton.

According to one resident in the neighborhood, two fraternities rented homes for a weekend recently and threw wild parties.

“If we receive a complaint, we provide it (to) our Marshals Office and we go out and conduct an investigation,” Knighton said.

The county administrator told Regan officials are looking into tighter restrictions and licenses on the rental of lakefront vacation properties in neighborhoods.

Rosemary Bell, who has lived there for 10 years, doesn’t think that is necessary.

“I think it's important that renters should be vetted and if something does go wrong, the owner has to follow up on it,” Bell said. “I’m a capitalist and I believe in people being able to buy something and do what they want with it.”

Several people who live there told Regan the home owners association is addressing ways to clamp down on renters who disturb the neighborhood.
