Police: Yelling man runs kids off playground during recess

DACULA, Ga. — Witnesses say a man jumped the fence, ran toward kids during recess and started screaming at them. The principal sent a letter home with students Wednesday afternoon, praising the teacher's action when this happened.

Fourth-grade student Jenna Hannibal didn't get her chance to play on the swings at school Wednesday. School leaders kept everyone inside after the incident.

Jenna didn't know why her class was kept inside until her teacher handed her a letter to take home. While the third-grade students at Dacula Elementary were on the playground, teachers say a man climbed over the fence, charged the kids and began yelling.

Channel 2's Tony Thomas reports the man, in his 30s, was upset about the noise coming from the playground.

"Why would you move by a school, because the school's been there, if you're going to be troubled by the children making noise?" Jenna's father, Abdule Hannibal, said.

Administrators say teachers were able to get the students inside before anything serious happened. The principal wrote to parents that school police did issue a trespass warning notifying the man he was not to come on campus or approach our students and staff.

"I feel like he might come back. Maybe not like now, but sometime in the future and have a weapon or something," Jenna said.

The principal says she asked school police to continue to monitor the situation and asked staff to keep a vigilant watch over the playground.
