Gwinnett County Schools says the well-being of their students is a top priority.

But Carla Royston, the mother of a young student at Rosebud Elementary in Gwinnett County, says the district failed her family because of what happened Tuesday.

“I had talked to the principal, and the first thing she told me was, ‘I want to let you know first and foremost, Jax is okay,’” Royston says.

That approach did not sit well with Royston. She dropped everything and rushed to Rosebud Elementary in Loganville.

Her 5-year-old son Jax is a special needs pre-K student there.

“She proceeded to tell me that his hair had been cut significantly ... And she said it was not cut by a student, but an assistant teacher,” Royston said.

She says she sent Jax to school with ponytails that day, but when she picked him up, several inches of his hair were gone. She says Jax’s main teacher called down to the office after noticing the class paraprofessional was acting unusually.

“She said the assistant teacher hugged her and said ‘I love you’ three times ... She said ... ‘Well, what’s wrong? Are you okay? Are you sick?’” Royston said

The paraprofessional allegedly got up, grabbed her things and walked out.

Royston told Carter, “The main teacher went to throw something in the trashcan, and that’s when she noticed there was hair in the trashcan.”

She says students came forward confirming that the paraprofessional cut Jax’s hair.

His father, Will Royston, says he was stunned.

“Do we know if she held him down and cut it? Or what she used to cut it ? Was it just scissors? Was it a knife?” Royston said. “You don’t really know what could have happened. She could have done anything. It doesn’t sit well.”
