100-year-old volunteer has given nearly 40 years, $1 million to Duluth hospital

DULUTH, Ga. — At the reception desk at Northside Hospital Duluth, her smile says it all.

“You’ve got to like your environment. This was like home,” Dorothy Rainey said.

Rainey has been a hospital volunteer for nearly 40 years.

“She has just been a godsend to this hospital system,” Gwinnett Medical Center Foundation President Jason Chandler said.

Rainey had a long career with the Shell Oil Company, but after retiring at the age of 58, she kept working, this time at the hospital.

Since 1985, she has logged more than 6,000 hours. Over the past 20 years, she donated more than $1 million to the hospital.

A few weeks back, her numerous friends at the hospital threw her a surprise 100th birthday celebration.

“They did the same thing at 90, and then they did it at 99. You can’t believe it! I’ve just been honored from day one!” Rainey said.

Hospital administrators say Rainey has an open invitation to come back any time she wants to run the reception desk.
