CALHOUN, Ga. — Deputies are investigating what caused a deck collapse that sent 10 people to the hospital in Calhoun. Channel 2's Carl Willis spoke with a mother who said her infant and toddler were saved during the collapse.
The Gordon County fire chief says the collapse may have been due to poor construction or too many people may have been on the deck.
Regardless, a family came together for Thanksgiving and many of them ended up at the hospital.
Yasmin Garcia had just returned from the hospital when she spoke with Willis. She says she was surrounded by family celebrating Thanksgiving when the deck collapsed.
"It collapsed. Everyone just fell on top of each other," Garcia. "It was really, really bad. My babies, they're young."
Garcia's two daughters, aged 2 months and 15 months, were among the 10 people who fell at the home on Ash Court.
"My mother was holding the 2-month-old and my father was holding the other," Garcia said.
Garcia's father suffered the worst injury. She says he was on the bottom of the pile and had extensive head trauma.
Garcia says her father was flown to a hospital in Chattanooga. She told Willis his condition is improving.
