Ga. 400 chase narrowly misses GDOT worker

NORTH FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — Police dash cam video shows a high-speed chase through part of metro Atlanta that narrowly missed hitting a Georgia Department of Transportation worker.

Two Forsyth County men are now facing serious charges following the chase.

It all started when a Forsyth County deputy tried to pull over a white Mitsubishi for no insurance on Georgia 400 near Majors Road Tuesday.

"The vehicle went into the median and was driving in the grass,” said Sheriff’s Department spokesman Robin Regan. "Speeds were in excess of 100 mph."

Regan says the driver took off quickly, coming within inches of hitting a GDOT surveyor on the shoulder of 400.

"Due to the traffic the deputy ended up calling off the chase,” Regan said.

The chase ended minutes later when the car got off at Old Milton Parkway.

"Struck the concrete median that divides the lanes. He hit it so hard it destroyed his vehicle,” Alpharetta Dept. of Public Safety Director George Gordon said.

Police say Kenneth Wilbanks and John Delatorre then fled into the new Avalon Complex, which sits across the street from Alpharetta police headquarters.

"In about two minutes we had both in custody. One was hiding behind some trees inside the development. The other one was hiding in a breezeway for restaurant access,” Gordon said.

Deputies say that split-second decision to run will likely result in some hard time.

“It just put everybody in danger,” Gordon said.

Police say one of the men had a probation violation which is likely why they didn't stop in the first place.

Now each is facing charges including aggravated assault and fleeing from police.

Both spent a short time at North Fulton Hospital, but are now in the Forsyth County Jail.
