Relief could be on the way for homeowners in Fulton County

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — Relief could be on the way for homeowners in Fulton County.

Complaints have been pouring in to the Fulton County Tax Assessor’s office and commissioners have been getting an earful, since residents have been receiving their 2017 property tax assessments.

Fulton County officials estimate the average tax assessment increased by 13 percent.

Some residents told Channel 2 Action News their assessments increased between 50 and 75 percent.

“My value went up 63% year over year, which essentially doubles my tax bill,” said Fulton County resident Levi Walls.

Walls was one of about 50 residents who packed a meeting room at the Buckhead Library Wednesday morning.

Fulton County Commission Chairman John Eaves hosted his third community meeting to address the tax assessment spike.

Chairman Eaves told Channel 2 he has concerns about the thoroughness and accuracy of the assessments.

He is urging the Board of Assessors to rescind this year’s tax assessment notices, to freeze property assessments at 2016 levels and to re-examine the process of determining assessments.

The Board is scheduled to vote on Eaves’ proposals Thursday afternoon.

“Tomorrow’s D-Day in terms of the decision,” said Eaves.

Meanwhile, Chairman Eaves encourages anyone who feels their assessment is incorrect, to file an appeal.

The deadline to appeal is July 10.
