Fulton County deputy, brother killed in off-duty incident, sheriff says

NEWTON COUNTY, Ga. — A Fulton County sheriff’s deputy was shot and killed, along with one of her brothers, in an off-duty incident in Newton County, Fulton County Sheriff Pat Labat confirms to Channel 2 Action News.

Labat said Deputy Shakeema Brown Jackson leaves behind a 17-month-old child.

Jackson became a Deputy Sheriff just over a month ago.

The sheriff’s office said Jackson is being remembered as eager to learn, and always had a positive disposition. Coworkers said she was bubbly, and, no matter how disrespectful inmates may have been, always greeted them with “Good morning,” earning their respect.

Labat said the Newton County sheriff’s office is investigating.

“It’s a hard time for the sheriff’s office and we are asking for everyone’s prayers, continued prayers,” Labat said.

Labat said the Fulton County sheriff’s office is pulling together a team of peer counselors and offering employee assistance to the deputy’s coworkers.

Newton County Sheriff Ezell Brown said preliminarily the incident may or may not be a domestic dispute. Officials say Jackson lived in the Covington home with a man and her 17-month-old child.

Police say the pair was killed around 10:30 p.m. The child was not hurt.

Channel 2 Action News crews on the scene watched as investigators brought out a K9 unit to look for something in the backyard, but it is unclear what they were searching for.

Neighbors told Channel 2′s Dave Huddleston that they did not hear anything, but noticed Jackson’s brother’s car in the driveway Wednesday evening.

Sheriff Brown said he sends his condolences to the victims’ family and to Labat and his staff members.
