Family grieves as police make arrest in weekend homicide

ATLANTA — The family of a DeKalb County teen shot to death in a car told Channel 2 Action News police have a suspect in custody.

Police have arrested 20-year-old Dearies Favors in connection with the death.

Family members celebrated Monday evening after getting a call from the detective. Police were called to the Vineyards of Flat Shoals apartments around 5 a.m. Sunday.

Investigators found DeMarcus Booker, 18, shot to death in an older model Jaguar.

Witnesses told investigators a passenger in the car shot Booker several times and took off on foot.

"I love him. I'm going to miss him," Booker's aunt Sabrina Wesley said.

Wesley told Channel 2's Amy Napier Viteri news of an arrest helps ease the pain some.

"I am very angry. And to know to feel it may have been somebody that my nephew trusted. I'm extremely angry," Wesley said.

"This child thought he was riding with a friend," said family friend Sheila Hurd.

Booker's mother was too upset to speak on camera. Her godmother, Hurd described the phone call she got early Sunday morning.

"His mother called me, crying and screaming. 'They done killed my child,'" Hurd said.

DeKalb Police spent hours Sunday looking for evidence and talking to witnesses. They did not release details on how or why the shooting happened.

"He was fun," Wesley said. "He was quiet and laid back and he'd do anything out of the kindness of his heart for anybody. They took a big piece of our heart. Honestly."

Police said they did not believe the shooting was random.
