SMYRNA, Ga. — A woman says animal control would not help when she reported that three dogs had been abandoned in a nearby home for more than a month.
Nancy Martin told Channel 2's Michael Buczyner that she let two of the dogs out of an abandoned Smyrna home Wednesday afternoon after learning about the situation on Facebook. She said one of the dogs was dead.
"I don't know what would have happened had we not let them out today. I really don't," Martin said. "Literally every square inch of that house is covered in feces."
Martin showed Buczyner pictures she took inside the home, most are too graphic to share.
"It's absolutely horrible. It just brings me to tears. What I saw in there – I can't talk about," Martin said.
Neighbors said a renter abandoned the dogs without food or water a month ago.
Cobb County Animal Control visited the home several times after neighbors complained, but neighbors said agents left both times without taking action. Two investigation notices, dated April 15 and 24, were found on the door of the home.
"You can see the animals clearly in major distress. How do you walk away from that?" Martin said.
A spokesperson with Cobb County said animal control agents did not obtain a warrant to enter the home because it was not considered a life-threatening situation, but neighbors disagree.
"A dog died. Maybe they could have saved the dog if they would have gotten in there a little sooner," a neighbor said.
The dogs Martin removed from the home were taken to a shelter.
The home's owner lives out of state and did not return Buczyner's request for comment.
