ATLANTA — Channel 2 Action News found several disturbing videos of students fighting at Benjamin E. Mays High School in southwest Atlanta.
The videos were posted to Mays High Shaderoom, a newly created Instagram page that models itself after The Shaderoom, a celebrity and trending news platform that has amassed nearly 18 million followers on Instagram since 2014.
The Mays version describes itself as “your one and only source into the lives at Mays High."
The creator, who has remained anonymous, asks their more than 800 followers to send in their best fight videos and any other gossip students are willing to share.
The violent brawls posted online are so out of control, police are forced to intervene.
Parents who watched the disturbing videos reached out to Channel 2 Action News because they’re concerned about the safety of their children.
“I really don’t know what to say. As a mother, I would be hurt to see my kids involved in that,” one parent said.
On Monday, we sent the findings of our investigation to the school district, which sent out this robocall to parents: "Our Atlanta Public Schools Police Department has requested that the site be taken down.”
On Tuesday, a spokesperson for the district followed up with a statement confirming that disciplinary action has been taken against students engaged in inappropriate behavior in the videos on the site.
Right now, it’s unclear how many students were disciplined. It’s also unclear if anyone was hurt.
The district says they have a social media policy that students and faculty are required to follow.
Read the full statement from the district below:
“Atlanta Public Schools is aware of a social media site that contains messages and videos of an inappropriate nature, pertaining to Mays High School. The District has asked that the site be taken down, and disciplinary action in accordance with the student code of conduct has been taken against students engaged in inappropriate behavior in the videos on the site.”
