Witnesses run for cover when shots fired near Zaxby's

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — Police were called to a reported shooting near a Zaxby’s in DeKalb County Wednesday afternoon.

Authorities are investigating whether an employee was involved in a possible shootout in a parking lot.

Channel 2’s Liz Artz broke the news on Twitter and was at the scene at Redan and South Hairston roads.

Witnesses told her around lunchtime, they heard several shots while they ran for cover.

"It was like pow pow pow pow and then we ducked and hid behind the UHaul and then as we were running to get into the BP," witness Michelle Rodgers said.

She said she heard about nine or 10 gunshots.

Police held a dozen employees inside the restaurant for hours.

The restaurant re-opened just before 3:30 Wednesday afternoon.

Witnesses told police a man was shot, but police cannot find him.

"From what witnesses say, there was somebody from Zaxby's and another guy involved in the shooting. We do know we've got a number of shell casings. A shootout did happen, we're just trying to put all the pieces together right now," DeKalb County police Capt. DL Jordan said.

Police said they found numerous shell casings at a neighboring Pizza Hut, where they believe the shooting happened.

Police said they are checking area hospitals to see if they can find the victim.

No one has been arrested. Police believe witnesses may know who fired the weapon.
