"A church member that lives next door called us and let us know that the woods beside the church were on fire," said Rev. Bob Lindsay

Lindsay said that was an unsettling call and he rushed over.

"It was just concern that the fire might spread and affect the church building or someone was hurt," Lindsay told Channel 2’s Carl Willis.

But DeKalb County Assistant Fire Chief Shane Dobson said the fire near Hillandale Drive that was moving toward Interstate 20 was quickly contained.

Dobson told Willis it all started in a large heap of dumped tires.

"You never know who's back there. You never know who's dumping what, what it is. We don't know a cause for sure. We do feel like it originated right there in that rubbish area," Dobson said.

That fueled the fire and was only made worse by the dry conditions.

"It's super dry. We haven't had any rain for a while. So, we're getting a few of these a week," Dobson said.

"Just thankful for the fire department getting here in a timely manner and taking care of the fire before it spread," Lindsay said.
