AVONDALE ESTATES, Ga. — The Avondale Estates community has raised more than $17,000 to help the family of a 21-year-old student who was hit by a car and killed last week.
Shelby Long was hit last Friday around 7:30 p.m. on Covington Highway near the intersection of Stratford Road, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution.

Long graduated from Decatur High School and was a student at the University of Mississippi. She worked at the Botiwalla restaurant in Ponce City Market.
Long was taken to the hospital, where she died.

Police said she was not on a marked crosswalk at the time of the accident. Two witnesses told Avondale Estates Police that the driver was not at fault and no charges were filed.
Long was an organ donor.
A GoFundMe page set up to help with Long’s funeral expenses had raised $17,450 by Monday morning.

“Shelby’s generous and caring spirit and bright and contagious smile touched so many,” Joey Beard wrote on GoFundMe. “She will be dearly missed but her light WILL shine on.”
