Crews working to repair tilted billboard in Cobb County

COBB COUNTY, Ga. — Repair crews are working as quickly as they can to fix a five-story billboard leaning over a busy Cobb County road.

Crews said recent gusty winds likely popped a weld on the billboard near I-75 and Kennesaw State University.

Police closed busy George Busbee Parkway near the college campus after someone noticed the billboard leaning a bit too much right over the four-lane road.

When firefighters and, later, a work crew took a closer look, they found that a main weld between two of the segments had apparently failed. They believed it was likely the victim of recent high winds.

Crews set up a large crane to stabilize and straighten the billboard while crews worked on the weld. Crews are hoping to have everything fixed Monday night.

The repair crew estimated the billboard was more than a decade old, and had been sold to a new company a few years back.  The foreman told Channel 2's Ross Cavitt, and the county confirmed, that once billboards pass initial permitting and inspection they typically aren't re-inspected unless the owner hires a private firm to do so, and it is unknown when or if that had happened with this billboard.

No one knows how long the billboard had been leaning, and some folks who drive the parkway said they now look at all billboards with a cautious eye.
