COBB COUNTY, Ga. — The Red Cross has set up a shelter for nearly 60 people who are homeless after a Cobb County apartment building went up in flames.
Fire investigators are now working to find out what caused the fire at the Lake Crossing Apartments on Riverside Parkway in Austell.
“I’m getting ready for bed and all of a sudden I’m hearing knocking at the door,” fire victim Christopher Mosley said.
Nearly 60 people are forced to start over with just the clothes on their backs after evacuating their building.
“We are working with our government partners in order to help open up a shelter here,” American Red Cross disaster program manager Jarrod Cochran said.

The organization told Channel 2′s Elizabeth Rawlins that it’s not often a fire displaces so many people that it requires volunteers to establish and set up a temporary shelter.
“The decision was made because of the number of clients that were impacted,” Cochran said.
Mosely and his family are one of many taking advantage of the disaster relief services that are being offered to victims at the Collar Park Community Center, including sleeping on cots.
“It was a full panic. We grabbed phones, wallets, keys, anything important,” Mosley said.
And while sleeping on a cot is nothing compared to your own bed, victims told Rawlins that they are grateful to have made it out of bed just in time.
“Neighbors came by and evacuated everyone,” Mosely said.
